RAINY DAY A/C TIPS

TIPS FOR YOUR A/C IN THE RAIN.

Over 10 inches of rain was reporting being received in the DFW metroplex the past week. With the heavy rain and flash floods across North Texas, homeowners are wondering how they should care for their A/C during storms. The rainy day question often asked is “what steps do I need to take to protect my A/C during bad weather”?  Cogburn’s Heating and Air Conditioning has the answers with our rainy day A/C tips below!

HOW DO I PROTECT MY AIR CONDITIONING UNIT FROM HEAVY RAIN?

The great news is that your A/C is designed for this type of weather. The internal components of the A/C are protected so have no fear! If you’re concerned you can always cover your unit with custom covers available from the manufacturer.

WHAT DO I DO IN THE CASE OF A FLOOD?

Although your air conditioner is extremely resilient it would not necessarily hold up in a flood zone. If the unit is completely submerged in water this can cause permanent damage. Another risk can come from tree branches, roof elements and other objects susceptible to high winds damaging your air conditioning unit. In order to determine the extent of damage we recommend sending one of our Cogburn’s service pros over to check out any damage. This is a service we provide to you at absolutely no cost with a free estimate! (Request service here.)

DO I NEED TO CHECK MY A/C AFTER THE STORM HAS PASSED?

You may be wondering what you need to do to check your A/C once the rain has stopped. First, double check that your unit is not underwater and visually scan your vents to ensure there are no objects blocking the areas. Water build up can cause mold. Do a scan of your home and HVAC unit to ensure there are no areas that could be susceptible to mold. Heavy storms can bring in bacteria and other elements, after a heavy storm consider rinsing your air compressor to rid the unit of any excess particles that may have entered the vents. Check out this quick DIY guide to rinsing your air compressor here.
