RELOCATING AN ENTIRE A/C SYSTEM

Welcome to another edition of Cogburn’s Heating and Air Conditioning Radio. I’m Tim Crouch along with Byron Cogburn, and Byron, today we’re going to get real personal. We’re going to talk about my air conditioner, where you just had a major job that had to completely relocate all the venting and all the ducts in my house. Talk a little bit about what you did.

Byron: Well Tim, what we needed to do first is find out what your home actually needed. And then we actually did an analysis of each room in the house to find out how much air needed to be moved in the house. We relocated all the ducting in the attic, relocated the equipment in the attic, the gas piping and the electrical. And once we completed that job then I came in and analyzed it to make sure that the noise levels were proper, the air flow was proper in each room. And it really turned out really nice.

Tim: Now some people would be asking, “well why did you have to relocate the vents?” And the truth is that in my house, which is about 50 years old, the vents were in the floor which is a short-lived idea from the early ’60s that didn’t work very well at my house.

Byron: No, no. No when your duct system fills up with water when it rains it’s not good.

Tim: And just from your experience, why would people put vents in a floor?

Byron: Well years ago the idea was that most homes in the ’60s only had heat. So heat rose, and so they put vents in the floor so that when the heat would come on it would just slowly rise up to the ceiling. So then in the ’70s and so-forth, when people put A/C in, the floor vents didn’t really make sense.

Tim: So when you looked at the job at my house, how complicated was that to make those kinds of decisions about what needed to be done?

Byron: Well not very difficult really, Tim. It’s just a matter of if we had to replace your equipment, or keep your equipment if your equipment was adaptable to a horizontal application from down-flow application. That was probably the most difficult, honestly.

Tim: And the truth was that it did adapt, and so you were able to move all of the units up into the attic, and then all the venting and the duct work is in the attic now.

Byron: Right. And then when we walked through the job together, we both agreed that it was extremely nice. Wouldn’t you agree?

Tim: It’s great. And it’s been great to have that done because in the midst of all the rain with all the problems we had where our vents in the floors were filling up with water, it created other kinds of issues in our house, and now those issues are gone. We don’t have to deal with water sitting in our duct work, and all the humidity and other things that came with that.

Byron: Right. And I’m sure your wife’s happy also.

Tim: And she is. So this has been another edition of Cogburn’s Heating and Air Conditioning Radio. If you have a heating and air conditioning issue that you need help with, Byron helped me and he can help you.
