Taking just thirty seconds every month to make a simple change out of your air conditioning and heating system filter can literally add years to the life of your system. Unfortunately, we at Cogburn’s Heating and Air all too often find a homeowner has neglected this simple procedure, causing expensive repairs and premature system failure.

We understand that it is easy to forget to change out your air filter. A simple reminder on your calendar to change your filter on the same day of each month is a good way to avoid overlooking this easy and inexpensive way to protect your system.

If you are running your air or heating on a heavy schedule, we recommend checking it every two weeks. To make sure it is not dirty, simply remove the filter and hold it up to the light. If you can no longer see light clearly through the filter, it is time to change it. A dirty filter will cause your system to work harder in the winter and summer. And, in the summer, a clogged filter can actually cause the air conditioning to fail due to the coils freezing from improper air flow.

Filters are also designed to protect the blower motor from collecting dirt. Such a situation can cause the blower motor to work much harder and inefficiently, ultimately causing it to fail.

Changing your filter is the most inexpensive and easiest maintenance procedures you can do. Inexpensive fiberglass filters will do the trick. If you are concerned about allergies or larger airborne particles, more expensive and longer lasting filters are available.

When you do install the filter, make sure you choose the exact size for your system and always note the arrow on the side of the filter is pointing toward the blower motor.  An improperly installed filter can allow dirt to skirt the filter and directly enter the duct system and blower motor.

We also encourage our customers to have their systems checked at the beginning of winter and summer to make sure the heating and air cooling systems are working properly and safely. This investment goes a long way in protecting your system against costly repairs at the most inconvenient time.
