IDENTIFYING COMMON WEAR AND TEAR ON AC UNITS FROM SUMMER

Although the cooler weather is rolling in there is no doubt that summer is perhaps one of the hardest times for your AC. There are virtually dozens of issues that can pop up from these hot months since your AC is typically working harder. We have found that many homeowners experience more A/C problems than anticipated during hot summer months. Being able to identify these issues before they cause long-term damage to your AC all-together is key! There are three common issues that pop up from the summer months that can signal AC problems. If you come across any of these issues be sure to give us a call and your Cogburn’s service tech can come take a look!

  1. Refrigerant Leaks- this is a very common issue as your AC unit is working over time during the hotter summer months. Instead of being able to rest every now and again like AC units do in the cooler months, during the summer it is likely that your AC will be working non-stop. If your AC unit is taking longer to cool down, the air coming from your vents is not cool, or you suspect that there is something wrong with your unit, you may want to seek professional help. Refrigerant leaks are something that most homeowners prefer not to tackle on their own.
  2. Efficiency Loss- you may also suspect that your AC unit is using far more electricity and energy than it did in the past. If your electric bill is normally lower during the summer than it has been, you may be experiencing efficiency loss. This can be related to two things, first off, how hot it is outside. If it is 100+ degrees outside it is likely that your AC is going to be far less efficient than it would be in 80-degree weather. The second issue you may be running into is an aging unit. This is not necessarily a bad thing if you keep the unit serviced by a professional that can exchange parts and make repairs, but it may also signal the time to buy a new unit.
  3. Broken Compressor- the compressor of any AC unit works much like the human heart, it works to pump refrigerant trough the system to cool the air before it is then pumped into your home. You may notice that the air is not as cool as it should be, that your unit is making strange noises, or that it has completely stopped working all together. Most systems will shut down when the pressure is too high or too low which certainly signifies that you need the help of a repairman or a technician that works with your brand of AC unit.

AC units can be a finicky thing. They may seem fine one day then break down entirely the next. If you live in a state like Texas we can expect far more wear and tear on your unit than you would in a cooler climate. That being said, with the help of a skilled technician and proper maintenance a unit can work great despite the heat. Our team at Cogburn’s Heating and Air Conditioning is available answer any questions and help address issues like refrigerant leaks, efficiency loss and broken compressor.
