The Refrigerant R-22, or HCFC-22, is a freon product that is being phased out due to the fact that the EPA has deemed it a detriment to the environment. Prior to 2010, R-22 was the refrigerant most often used in air conditioners. Since 2012, all AC units have been produced without using R-22.
The phase out of this refrigerant does not mean existing units produced prior to 2010 cannot have their units replenished with the R-22 refrigerant. The EPA is allowing the change to ozone-friendly refrigerants to take place gradually as units wear out and are replaced. So, older AC units can still be serviced with R-22 or alternate refrigerants. The catch is, as R-22 is phased out, the cost of replenishing a unit is higher. By 2020, R-22 can no longer be produced so consumers with older AC units will have to rely on reclaimed supplies or previously produced supplies. This will result in even higher replacement prices.
If you are not sure when your unit was manufactured, you can usually check the outdoor unit- there you should find a nameplate indicating the date of manufacture. Also, the nameplate usually lists the type of refrigerant used in your unit.
Older AC units are far less energy efficient than newer models, resulting in higher summer cooling bills. This, plus the higher cost of replacing R-22 that has leaked out of your unit may mean it is time to consider a higher efficiency unit that is much more environmentally friendly.
